iKubasa aims to clean up the local environment, both by physical action and by spreading the idea to other Maputo schools. Our beach clean-ups are used as an opportunity to engage with the local community and it is becoming increasingly common for casual visitors to the beach to join us in the litter-picking. A further aim of iKubasa is to provide and install dustbins on local beaches, as the shortage of waste facilities has been highlighted by the people we have spoken too. iKubasa also aims to spread the word of `clean it up’, by visiting local schools and telling them about our project. We hope that other local schools will take on their own iKubasa projects. A primary goal for iKubasa is to establish a recycling culture at AISM. This will begin with a campaign for the use of reusable water bottles and by the end of the year, we hope to have established paper and aluminum recycling within the school.
