Director’s Welcome

On behalf of the American International School of Johannesburg, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the GISS delegates and change makers. At AISJ we are committed to offering a balanced program for our students, and for us, that means balancing the four pillars of Academics, Arts, Athletics and critically – Service. Hosting a conference such as this allows us to take valuable steps towards ensuring that a culture of Service is embedded within our school.

We believe it is our responsibility to engage with, learn from, and contribute positively to our communities. The notion that GISS can provide students from all different backgrounds the opportunity to share, debate, and develop ideas for a better tomorrow is very compelling.  GISS is a powerful opportunity for you to strategize solutions for global issues, exchange ideas for positive change, and continue taking action in your own community when you return.

This year’s GISS theme is Phambili, which in Zulu means “moving forward to face the challenges of the future”. As a school we pride ourselves on being true to our mission of developing inspired learners who are connected, creative, and courageous. As a service leader in your school and community, you embody these characteristics and GISS offers a powerful opportunity to continue growing as global leader alongside your peers. I hope you will fully take advantage of this unique opportunity to network, connect, collaborate, and build relationships while tackling the global issues of your generation.

I hope through your experiences at GISS you are inspired to continue this leadership in your community and in all you do as you progress through life.
